With a subtitle that evokes the poetry of one of the Vietnam War era's counter-culture visionaries, Vietcong: Purple Haze is a port of the PC bundle that includes Pterodon's original squad-based shooter Vietcong and its first expansion pack, Vietcong: Fist Alpha. Vietcong takes players into the jungles of Vietnam and hands them responsibility of leading an elite six-person U.S. Special Forces squad. Players control the squad leader and are responsible for assessing each mission and issuing orders based on each squad member's capabilities. Available vehicles include the CH47 Chinook twin-engine helicopter, the supersonic F-5 Tiger fighter plane, the Russian off-road GAZ 69 (Gorki'y Automobil Zavod), and the famous UHD1 "Huey" helicopter. Multiplayer options allow head-to-head confrontations between human-controlled squads of Vietcong and U.S. Special Forces soldiers. Vietcong: Fist Alpha the first "Official Mission Pack" for Vietcong adds seven new single-player missions and eight multiplayer maps, as well as additional weapons and equipment based on the era, such as M-14s and Tokarev svt 38s. Two new NPC solders join the five featured in the original game's Special Forces unit. Additional aircraft in the mission pack include an an alternate Chinook helicopter, the B-52 strategic bomber, the McDonnel-Douglass F-4U Phantom, and the F-105 Thunderchief.
