Though set against the backdrop of the Second World War, Iron Aces weaves a fictitious narrative chronicling the battles fought over a small chain of islands in the South Pacific, between four major military powers (Britain, America, Germany and Japan). You join the war effort as a newly recruited Allied fighter pilot and before long you'll be thrust into a series of aerial campaigns that will ultimately determine the outcome of the war. These missions will see you engaging in bombing runs on enemy ships as well as aerial dogfights with various aircraft, all of which are rated according to their proficiency in categories such as Attack, Defense, Speed, Mobility, Bomb, and Climb. A preferred fighter plane can be chosen from the handful available, prior to a mission. While Iron Aces focuses on an arcade-style of play in lieu of a more simulation-like approach, players will need to keep an eye on their fuel gauge and remaining ammunition in order to successfully complete their assigned missions. At the conclusion of a mission, a replay can be viewed, detailing your exploits in battle. If desired, this can be saved to the VMU for future viewing. A Versus mode allows one or two players to partake in cooperative and competitive battles with up to eight planes at once. The Air Battle option pits two squadrons of planes against one another, with the object being to shoot down all enemy planes. The Naval Battle, on the other hand, tasks players with sinking the enemy's aircraft carrier. Players can accustom themselves to the nuances of the title by participating in the Training mode.
