Description

California Games is a port of the computer game originally developed by Epyx. Up to eight players alternate turns while taking part in a competition set in California. The competition's events include: half pipe skateboarding, foot bag, surfing, roller skating, BMX bike racing, and flying disk toss. Half pipe skateboarding requires players to do a variety of tricks while skating back and forth. It is very much like the half pipe event found in Skate or Die. Foot bag is what many people know as Hacky Sack (the brand name of Mattel's foot bag). Players use their feet, knees, and head to perform tricks with a small ball. Surfing is viewed from the side as the screen scrolls horizontally to the right. While outrunning a wave players must perform as many tricks as they can. Tricks typically require a player to go airborne and successfully land while facing the correct direction to avoid falling off of their board. Roller skating takes place along a sidewalk next to the beach. Here players will have to jump over such items as cracks in the sidewalk and dropped ice-cream cones. Tricks can also be performed along the way. BMX bike racing features a course filled with hills, logs, and potholes. Players can perform a large variety of tricks while attempting to be the fastest to the finish line. Flying disk toss has players trying to throw the disk as far as they can. For the throw to count the person on the receiving end must catch it successfully. A flying disk is the same thing that most people call a Frisbee (the name of the flying disk invented by Wham-O).
