Sega's NHL 2K series moves from the Dreamcast to next-generation systems with NHL 2K3. The most notable addition is the option to play multiple seasons in Franchise Mode, where players can hire various scouts and coaches, conduct a fantasy draft, and manage rosters by signing free agents, releasing high-priced veterans, or trading for a young superstar. Players can also create their own likenesses with the Create-Player mode and assign ratings to a variety of skills. All NHL teams and players have been included from the 2001-2002 season, with home stadiums featuring animated crowds wearing team-specific jerseys.
