Driver: Renegade is a mission-based driving game, in a New York City setting inspired by the long-running series (previously a property of GT Interactive and then Infogrames/Atari, currently published under the Ubisoft label). The driving action takes place in the top screen, in full 3D with real-time damage effects. Players can control their vehicles using the 3DS' accelerometer, tilting and turning the handheld to steer the speeding vehicles. By taking risks on the roadways, they can fill a "Rage" bar that gives a powerful burst of speed for debilitating collisions. Plot-advancing dramatic scenes play out in stylized animation sequences. The Grand Theft Auto-style adventure puts Driver fans back behind the wheel in the role of John Tanner, an expert wheelman and ex-cop who is obsessed with cleaning up the crime and corruption that plague the city. Tanner's desire for justice above all else sometimes finds him on the wrong side of the letter of the law, but he has at least one friend in a high place, to help smooth any feathers he ruffles in his quest for vengeance. Each urban driving challenge uncovers a new element in the plot, and suggests a new mission for Tanner to undertake. Intended for mature players, the Driver: Renegade story is themed with violence, betrayal, foggy morality, and dark temptations.
