Coaster Works allows Dreamcast gamers to design and build their own virtual roller coasters. Players design the coasters using a split-screen interface that allows the work to be viewed from several different angles. Instead of building the ride piece by piece from a limited selection of available track sections, the player has the freedom to extend the track in just about any direction desired. Once the coaster is complete, the player can take a ride on his or her creation, making sure that the first-hand experience meets (or exceeds!) expectations. After making any necessary revisions, the ride is opened to the virtual public, who will be the ultimate judge of the player's work.
