Description
Kemco's famous Top Gear line of racing games has been shrunk (literally) to fit on the Game Boy Color. The cars are now "pocket" versions of their former selves, meaning they are small enough to fit in, well, your pocket. Eight classes of rally vehicles are available, each rated in top speed, acceleration, and handling. Of course, not all of the cars will be offered right from the start -- you have earn them by placing within the top three in Championship mode. Championship mode consists of driving multiple laps against a field of eight computer-controlled drivers. The goal is to finish within the top three so you can receive a password and continue your attempt to unlock more cars and courses. Six themed courses include Grass Land, Desert, Jungle, Savannah, Night Town, and Ruin. Other play options are Time Attack and Vs. Battle. Time Attack has you racing against the clock, while Vs. Battle lets you challenge a friend via Game Link Cable. Top Gear Pocket has an outer case that is longer and heavier than the typical Game Boy Color cartridge. This is because the top of the cartridge features a rumble device powered by a single AAA battery, which activates a motor at different strengths and speeds during play. Players who veer off the course, for instance, will "feel" the terrain as the motor vibrates. Those who prefer a more traditional racing experience can turn off the game's rumble feature within the options menu.
