Similar to Pokémon, Robopon has the lead character Cody collecting robotic creatures in an attempt to win the BattleRobo Tournament. Cody needs to win the tournament in order to keep the nearly bankrupt Robopon Dispatching Company, which he recently inherited, from going out of business. Captured robotic creatures can be upgraded with various parts to improve their battling capabilities. Another way to upgrade creatures is through the use of infrared signals. The Robopon cartridge has a built-in infrared sensor that allows it to read signals from such devices as television and VCR remote controls.
