Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX (Nintendo Game Boy Color, 2001)

Product Specs
Description
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX might be based on the same engine as the previously released Road Champs BXS, but that certainly doesn't make them the same game. In fact, the title, which is based around the career of ten-time vert champion Mat Hoffman has much more to do with the likes of the Tony Hawk titles than anything else. As with many alternative sports titles in recent years, Pro BMX blends competitions with level goals and quotas. As the Game Boy Color cannot produce the 3D worlds of Mat Hoffman's PlayStation counterpart, the game takes place in a side-scrolling fashion. Players can, however, navigate the levels horizontally, moving their characters up and down over each course, choosing whether or not they want to hit a half-pipe or grind a rail. There are three specific types of levels to be found in the game: vert, street, and dirt. Each of these stage types has their own unique visual style and obstacles. Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX features eight different professional riders to choose from, including the titular champion himself. Each of these characters has a bevy of moves to choose from, including different grinds, vert spins, and modifiers. Players are encouraged to chain these moves together into combos, and each character even has their own signature special trick that will score players big points. The game features a special meter, which is filled by players performing tricks and combos. The higher the special meter, the faster the player can go, and when the meter is filled, the characters can execute their special moves. Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX also offers a training mode that allows players to get used to the game's controls.
