The Master System lost the North American market to the NES, and that shaped its collecting appeal: the NA library stopped at around a hundred releases, so a complete set is one of the few realistic full-library goals in 8-bit collecting. The system thrived in Europe and Brazil instead, which left a large import catalog beyond the NA set.
Sega packed Master System games in plastic clamshell cases like the Genesis after it, so complete copies survived at a healthy rate and boxed collecting is affordable here.
